The Marco Polo project is in process of constructing a 1/3 size replica of the Marco Polo that will be 27 meters (90 feet) long with an 18 meter (60 foot) mast. Spearheading this project is a group of local high school students and volunteers, under the guidance of Mr. Barry Ogden.
The Marco Polo was the worlds fastest ship during the latter
part of the 1800's. Originally launched in Saint John's Marsh
Creek in 1851, the Marco Polo circumnavigated the globe in
just 5 months, 21 days in 1852, considerably faster than any
other ship in history. It's reputation put Saint John
on the map as a shipbuilding centre. The project is scheduled
for completion in 2006. To check on their progress, click
