SAINT JOHN (CNB) - The Province of New Brunswick will invest $200,000 toward the completion of a comprehensive development plan for the Saint John Inner Harbour area, Premier Bernard Lord announced today.
Lord made the announcement with Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership President John Wallace and Saint John Mayor Shirley McAlary.
"This contribution affirms our pledge to invest in key public infrastructure that improves the quality of life for New Brunswickers and attracts new investment, new people and new tourism activity to the province," Lord said. "As part of Greater Opportunity: New Brunswick's Prosperity Plan, this announcement is important to the economic competitiveness of the Saint John region."
The funding, provided by the Regional Development Corporation, will be used to complete a waterfront master plan. The plan will allow the partnership group to proceed with specific waterfront economic, business and tourism development opportunities for the Saint John Inner Harbour area.
"Our community has clearly indicated that waterfront development is a priority for the Greater Saint John region," Wallace said. "We are extremely pleased to have Premier Lord and the Province of New Brunswick support our waterfront planning efforts. Our waterfront is a strategic economic development asset and an essential part of this region's infrastructure."
The waterfront master plan will include waterfront areas from the former Lantic Sugar site to Reversing Falls.
The Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership, composed of the City of Saint John, Saint John Development Corporation, Uptown Saint John, Enterprise Saint John, the Saint John Port Authority and the Saint John Board of Trade, will contribute $50,000 to the project.
