CIBC announces $9,500 contribution to Harbour Passage Project at 2003 Saint John CIBC Run For The Cure ceremonies!

Saint John, NB – Waterfront Development and the Harbour Passage (Passage du Port) Project received another major boost today as a result of $9,500 in new funding announced at the Saint John CIBC Run For The Cure Ceremonies held on Sunday, October 5, 2003.

CIBC joins a growing family of over 70 Harbour Passage Donors, and officially becomes the Project’s newest member in the “Builder” category.

Mayor Shirley McAlary commented on the significance of announcing CIBC’s contribution at the Run For The Cure Ceremonies: “CIBC’s Harbour Passage contribution is a wonderful way to thank the Community for their outstanding efforts in raising funds for Breast Cancer Research… both Cancer Research and Harbour Passage were the big winners here today. Thank you CIBC!”

Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership President John Wallace captured the significance of the day’s Announcement with the following comment: “To be successful, the waterfront development and Harbour Passage Project requires strong community support and innovative public-private sector Partnerships. Today we strengthened our Partnership with the community by welcoming CIBC as our newest Harbour Passage ‘Builder”.

Saint John Development Corporation President William Grant added: “On June 26, 2003 we officially opened Harbour Passage – Phase I and, with the support of local companies and organizations such as CIBC, we look forward to launching construction – this Fall - of the next Phase of Harbour Passage.”

Harbour Passage - Phase I created a series of inter-connected waterfront parks, recreation spaces and heritage sites extending from the Boardwalk at Market Square to York Point, Long Wharf Slip, Long Wharf, Harbour Station, Fort LaTour, HMCS Brunswicker and Chesley Drive. Harbour Passage - Phase II will extend along Chesley Drive towards Bentley Street. Future Phases could extend Harbour Passage to Hilyard St., Main St. and Fort Howe; to Reversing Falls and the Lower West Side; and around the water’s edge of the Coast Guard Site, to Pugsley Park, and down Water Street to the Lantic Sugar Site.

Harbour Passage – Phase I includes:
• a multi-purpose recreation trail network suitable for walking, running, biking and roller-blading;
• year-round public recreation, arts, cultural and heritage spaces;
• spectacular waterfront viewing areas;
• interpretive structures, signage, lighting and seating areas;
• landscaping, park areas, ponds and constructed wetland areas.

Harbour Passage – Phase I had a capital cost of $1.99 Million. Approximately one half of the required capital funding ($947,425) is being provided by the City of Saint John, with the remaining portion ($1,047,425) allocated from Harbour Passage funds raised-to-date from local individuals, businesses and public/private sector organizations.

To date, the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership has raised a total of $ 1,956,345 for the Harbour Passage Project and related waterfront design and planning work.

The allocation for funds raised to date is as follows:
• Harbour Passage (Phase I & II) Design / Planning Work: $142,455
• Harbour Passage Construction – Phase I: $1,043,933
• Harbour Passage Construction – Phase II: $769,957

Fundraising efforts will continue for future phases of Harbour Passage and other Waterfront Projects.
