Grand Opening of Harbour Bridge Pier to be celebrated May 5th!
For Immediate Release
May 3, 2004
(Saint John, NB) The Saint John Harbour Bridge Authority will proudly reveal its latest contribution to the Harbour Passage Project at 12:15 PM Wednesday, May 5th. The “Harbour Pier” was funded and constructed by the Harbour Bridge Authority and sits at the base of a Bridge Pier behind the HMCS Brunswicker. The structure was designed to replicate the shape of a ship and comes complete with a gangway to “board” the ship.
“We are very proud of this project”, states Ken Anthony, General Manager of the Harbour Bridge Authority. “The view of the Harbour and the mouth of the St. John River is spectacular and its location makes it an ideal spot to view the city. People will not only be able to walk along Harbour Passage, but can walk right up onto a Bridge pier that is surrounded by water complete with Harbour seals. “
“We designed the structure to resemble a ship to blend with the nautical theme of Harbour Passage and to recognize the proud heritage of shipbuilding in Saint John”, states Stephen Fitzpatrick, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Harbour Bridge Authority. “We are inviting the public to the Ribbon Cutting at the pier located on Harbour Passage behind HMCS Brunswicker.”
“The Harbour Bridge Authority has once again shown incredible generosity to the Harbour Passage Project and the citizens of Saint John by donating such a marvelous addition to Harbour Passage”, stated Bill MacMackin, President of the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership. “The Harbour Bridge Authority is a Founding Partner of the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership and has donated over $284,000 to the Harbour Passage Project already. With this new project, their total contribution exceeds $ 344,000!”
