For Immediate Release

June 21, 2004

(Saint John, NB) – Preparations for the June 24th Grand Opening Celebrations of Harbour Passage Phase II are well underway. Celebrations begin at 12:05 with an 1850 step walk from the trailhead on the boardwalk at the foot of Union Street to the pavilion on Chesley Drive at the foot of Bentley Street. Upon arrival at the pavilion at 12:20, there will be music, ceremonies, entertainment and more. Local 18, City of Saint John Outside Workers are hosting a BBQ on Chesley Drive throughout the celebrations with the proceeds going to P.R.O. Kids.

“We are thrilled to be opening this newest addition to the passage”, states Bill MacMackin, President of the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership. “The pavilion on Chesley Drive at the foot of Bentley Street is definitely the highlight of Phase II and will be particularly beautiful at night when it is all lit up. It provides a spectacular view of the Inner Harbour and will make a beautiful addition to the cranberry trail.”

Ross Jefferson, General Manager of the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership is also excited about the opening of this new phase. “The timing of this event couldn’t be better as we are thrilled to be able to open these new sections of Harbour Passage on the same day as celebrations are taking place for the 400th anniversary of the landing of Champlain and Dumont. June 24th will be an all day celebration!”

Phase II was been broken down into two components: the Chesley Drive extension and the Simonds Street extension. The Chesley Drive extension is 325 meters and picks up where Harbour Passage Phase I stopped, just past the HMCS Brunswicker. The Simonds Street extension is 400 meters long and will veer off of the existing Phase I of Harbour Passage near Fort LaTour and cross Hilyard Street to Simonds Street. The total length of the new sections of Harbour Passage equals 725 meters.

With the completion of Phase II, the total length of Harbour Passage will be 2.325 kilometers and will connect the north side of the city to the downtown with a safe walking, running and biking trail.

The design of Harbour Passage Phase II was completed by Daniel K. Glenn Ltd., who also designed Phase I and construction was done by Meridian Construction. The total capital cost for Phase II is $1.4 million.
