Pugsley Park Phase One Public invited to view and comment on the next step in the Water Street Project

For Immediate Release - November 6, 2008

(Saint John, NB) - Continuing with the goal of developing Water Street into a pedestrian friendly area that provides a good first impression for both citizens and visitors alike, Saint John Waterfront Development wishes to provide an update to the public as part of the Water Street initiative.

The public is invited to view and comment on the updated plan for Pugsley Park Phase One on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 at Kings County Room Hilton Saint John at 7 PM.

The preliminary work in the Water Street area started in 2005 with the participation of both the Saint John Port Authority with the demolition of the Pugsley Sheds and the City of Saint John with investments in rebuilding Water Street. In September 2006, Saint John Common Council accepted and endorsed the concept designs of Glenn Group Ltd. which included the creation of Pugsley Park at the foot of Princess Street.  This important project is in keeping with the substantial improvements that have been made in the Water Street area.

In the past, investments to Harbour Passage have proven to act as a catalyst bringing new development to the city.  Over the next 15 years, waterfront development planners anticipate private sector investment leading to over $200 million being added to the city’s tax base.

“The changes that have already taken place on Water Street have had a significant impact on the Precinct and the addition of Pugsley Park will only build on that success,” said Bill MacMackin, President of Saint John Waterfront Development. “The continued support and cooperation between all partners has allowed the transformation of the Waterfront to be truly realized.”

The Province of New Brunswick, through the Regional Development Corporation, has provided $400,000; and the City of Saint John contributed $1.1 million towards the undertaking.

Saint John Waterfront Development has the mandate to channel, focus, and direct the community of Greater Saint John’s collective energy and enthusiasm for waterfront development and to oversee the obligations of the Market Square complex.
