Market Square to expand, bringing more people to Uptown Saint John

For Immediate Release - February 17, 2009

SAINT JOHN, NB, CANADA – In these challenging economic times, Saint John is experiencing positive growth in the business sector.  Market Square’s owner, The Hardman Group Limited, will soon start construction on a 40,000 sq ft addition to the historic waterfront centre.  Since 1993, The Hardman Group Limited has been instrumental in defining the vision and re-development strategy for Market Square. The historic facility, a recipient of several design awards, is now considered one of New Brunswick’s most popular destinations for locals and tourists alike bringing thousands to the waterfront for exploring, shopping, dining and entertainment all year long.

The new 40,000 sq ft wing will be positioned along Smythe and Union Streets and will house the offices of Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories Inc., a current dockside tenant at Market Square. The Genesys centre in Saint John provides support, quality-assurance testing and software development of Genesys products for clients throughout North and Latin America.  Their Saint John office remains the primary Canadian office and an integral part of the company's global operations. With the recent transfer of twenty positions from its headquarters in California and the addition of several new positions, the Saint John location currently employs more than 130 people.

Genesys is now working with The Hardman Group Limited to design and create a modern office space that is large enough to accommodate their current needs while allowing for future growth. Construction on the new three-story addition to Market Square will commence immediately and will be completed by the end of 2009.  Genesys employees will enjoy the benefits of being located near the waterfront in Uptown Saint John; including easy access to the Harbour Passage and the indoor pedestrian pedway link to restaurants, shopping, services and fitness facilities.

“We are excited about being a part of this positive growth for the City” says Colin Whitcomb, Executive Vice President of the Hardman Group.  “The expansion will build on the growth Genesys is experiencing and will bring more positive changes to the city as we develop the new wing and position new tenants in the dockside space”.  The Hardman Group would like to express their appreciation to CIBC and the Saint John Development Corporation for their role in bringing this new development to the City.

The Hardman Group Limited has a long history of developing quality projects in the Atlantic Provinces. The firm has several office locations including Saint John, Moncton and Halifax.  In recent years, the firm has been working with the City of Saint John to develop the waterfront Coast Guard site into a new urban community which will include condominiums, a new hotel for the City as well as commercial and retail space.
